Sailing Yacht > Boats > Tulip

This 85’ high performance yacht with its classic looks proved a very exciting project.
The design takes in three generations of know-how in creating classic shapes, together with the latest thinking in delivering performance and an easy motion. Tulip is a timeless design encompassing simplicity and efficiency and fitted with a lifting keel to give the flexibility to anchor in secluded bays well away from the crowd. Tulip’s high modulus carbon rig has both increased performance and reduced pitching in a seaway.

The deck layout includes a comfortable cockpit and a second relaxed area behind the wheel with comfortable seating that folds away into the deck when not in use to maintain Tulip’s classic lines

A simple linear interior with plenty of natural light and ventilation gives a greater feeling of spaciousness below. The large saloon is bathed in light and provides good visuals on the world outside. The design also incorporates en-suite accommodation for the owner and two guests. The crew is provided for aft with fully independent accommodation with its own access.

Tulip was built in alloy by KMI in Holland. The design information flowed smoothly between our studio and the yard and great care was taken over customized details, some of which were unique. KMI have made significant advances in aluminum construction and their confidence in applying them was an eye opener.

The interior design by Sinot Design was based on our original general arrangement, and offers a unique atmosphere, mixing sophistication and practical features to provide a very personal flavour.

Tulip’s sea trials were a joy: She really came alive, was beautifully balanced and had a nice motion through what was a rough sea state, just as we anticipated she would at the design stage. The efficiency in wind angles achieved upwind through the channel marks reminded me of the importance of having racing standard VMGs even in a cruising yacht. Modern features like her T keel and full carbon rig and sail plan help here. Turning back down the waves on the way home highlighted the boat’s slippery hull characteristics and easy control.

The cockpit design combines space with good protection, and the adjustable seats makes for the most comfortable steering position I’ve experienced in years.

Seeing the owners getting so much enjoyment from sailing in what were quite rough weather conditions gave me great satisfaction.
