The Wally 100 superyacht combines the latest in round the world family performance cruising with the clean minimalist functionality that characterises all Wally yachts. Designed jointly by German and Mani Frers, Mani, based in Milan, believes that all his creations should provide a unique stage to share experiences and learn.
Mani explains: “Any design should encourage a crew to flourish by providing a sense of acceleration, power, control and protection so at the end of a voyage, whether racing or cruising, all onboard depart with a fresh outlook on sailing that inspires them to innovate in future endeavours.”
The design concept that led to the Wally 100 Indio and Y3K gravitates around efficiency. Even in the lightest breeze this design delivers an exciting performance without compromising seaworthiness in bad weather and long voyages. Her easily driven hull form also reduces the need for auxiliary engine power and fuel consumption, providing guests with maximum amount of enjoyable sailing time.
This approach makes full use of the latest technologies in design, construction and onboard systems. The hull is a new generation shape developed for maximum performance and enhanced sea keeping capabilities using tank testing, computational fluid dynamic (CFD), together with a mix of new ideas and feedback from previous designs. These methods enable us to optimize any design trade-offs with a good dose of creativity.
The appendages are a direct result of our racing developments where maximum control is an overiding priority. The simple sail plan has also been race-refined which, together with the hull and appendages, provide the best handling and performance package.
The construction method makes extensive use of carbon fibre to achieve a structure well able to sustain the loads in any weather condition as well as high speed impact and running aground. And thanks to an incredible job by the yard, noise and vibration levels usually associated with carbon technology have been eliminated.
Modern technologies are meaningless unless combined with an elegant and timeless shape, a practical deck and a warm interior with plenty of natural light. The layout is a fusion of previous solutions successfully developed in earlier Wally Yachts. It starts by concentrating heavy equipment in the most effective position and then develops privacy and practical spaces for sailing and at anchor.
The end result is a very distinctive solution with the main saloon aft matching the privacy of larger yachts with the owners and guest cabins forward. The interior teak finish provides an essence of style and purity missing in some modern alternatives without compromising performance.
With its centre cockpit, distinctive Wally Terrace-by-the-Sea aft and central deckhouse, the layout offers plenty of privacy for guests to enjoy the many options for sitting out on deck. Its simplicity also allows for manoeuvres to be completed with minimum crew and clatter.
The onboard systems which include power assisted sail controls and two-gear direct steering, work flawlessly and are key to a thrilling sail.
The sea trials completed in light airs and strong breeze at the Superyacht Regatta in Porto Cervo, were a testament to the sound design, engineering and construction quality achieved with speeds of 20 knots + while guests enjoyed a comfortable ride with a friendly yet unobtrusive crew. The highlight was to speed passed both traditional J Class and modern superyachts with ease upwind and down. That gave everyone a sense that with this Wally 100, we have achieved a true sailing yacht with all the modern comforts of life.
